On Monday, December 2nd of 2024, a unique accident happened near Payson, Utah. A small plane carrying two passengers was coming from Las Vegas and flying in the airspace above northbound Interstate 15. At around eight in the evening, the plane suddenly experienced a mechanical failure that caused the engine to quit midflight. The pilot and student pilot in the plane had limited options at that point. The closest airports were the ones in Nephi and Spanish Fork, but the pilots knew that they wouldn’t be able to make it. Ultimately, they made the decision to land on I-15.

At around 8:15 pm, the plane successfully landed on I-15 near mile marker 250 and the Utah Avenue overpass. Several vehicles were able to stop in the lane behind where the plane landed. Unfortunately, a driver in a Dodge pickup truck was not able to stop in time and ended up crashing into four other vehicles. All five of the cars ended up crashing into the plane after the Dodge pushed them. The plane was poorly lit, and so since it was nighttime visibility could have been a factor. Several of the cars were totaled in the accident, crushed in various ways. The plane also suffered damage from the collision.

After the catastrophic accident, authorities quickly arrived at the scene. Four people were injured in the crash. Two people were taken to the hospital for treatment of their serious injuries, while one other had mild injuries, and the last person had moderate injuries. Both of the people on board the plane were not injured. One of the people taken to the hospital in serious condition ended up dying overnight from their injuries, while the other is in stable condition.

The deceased was identified as 58-year-old Valdecir De Oliveira who came from Santaquin. He was in a Chevy pickup truck that was the first vehicle struck by the Dodge. De Oliveira’s wife and daughter were also in the truck, but thankfully were not seriously injured. De Oliveira is remembered as an excellent husband and father. His family is grieving his sudden death and is in shock about the incident. The family has not yet said if they are accepting donations to cover funeral costs.

Traffic on northbound I-15 came to a stop after the accident. The road was closed at 800 South in Payson, at mile marker 248. Traffic was rerouted by officials, and drivers were able to go back onto the interstate from State Route 164 or Payson Main Street at mile marker 253. The road was closed for around three hours so that Utah Highway Patrol workers could clean up the scene. They had to remove the cars from the crash site, as well as tow the plane off of the roadway. The plane is going to be dismantled so that moving it is easier and so that an in-depth inspection can take place. Shortly before 11:30 at night, all lanes of northbound I-15 were reopened.

The incident has left the local population shaken up. A barista from a coffee shop near where the plane landed, Olivia Carriloo, expressed anxiety about having to drive on the highway in the future. Although it’s true that you never know what’s going to happen, and that another person on the road could cause an accident no matter how safe you are being, the events that occurred on the 2nd are rare. Usually a plane is not going to land on the road in front of you. The important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and focus on the road so that you can react to potential hazards. Drivers need to be ready for anything.

The pilot and student involved in this case were following standard protocol for what should happen if the plane’s engine fails midflight. Pilots in training are taught that they must land the airplane safely on the ground without hurting themselves or anyone else. If they can’t get to an airport in time, then the highway may be the safest option. Not only was the interstate a long stretch of paved road, but it also was well-lit by street lights. Landing in a field at night would be more risky because the pilot wouldn’t be able to see obstacles in the dark.

The damaged plane is being held at a warehouse, where it will be dismantled for examination. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, along with the National Traffic Safety Board. They aim to determine what specifically caused the malfunction that forced the plane to emergency land. Troopers from the Utah Highway Patrol stated that impairment and distracted driving were not factors in the accident. However, speeding could still have been potentially involved. As of yet, ATP flight school, where the pilot and student came from, has yet to comment on the situation. More details about both the plane landing and the following auto accident should come out soon.

No matter what type of accident a person was injured in, whether that be a plane accident or a car accident, it’s important that they seek compensation. In cases such as the one discussed in this article, it can be difficult to assign fault. Is the accident the fault of the pilot that landed on the highway? The manufacturer of the plane part that failed?  The driver of the Dodge truck that wasn’t able to stop in time? It’s important that injury victims have a personal injury lawyer by their side that can help determine degrees of fault in an accident. Utah is a comparative fault state, so if a person is more than half at fault for an accident they can’t recover compensation. However, if they are determined to be less than half at fault they can.
