Head-On collision utah county

Winter is the most dangerous season for driving in Utah. Despite measures taken by officials to try and reduce the number of accidents, there were recently over twenty accidents that happened on I-15 over a period of a few days. Winter snowstorms have caused dangerous driving conditions and car accidents up and down the Wasatch Front this week. On Thursday, February 13th, 2025, southbound Interstate 15 was closed at milepost 350 in Pleasant View because of the severe weather. The road was closed around 1:30 in the afternoon, and southbound traffic on the road was forced to exit and take alternate routes. Even more snow was forecast to fall on the weekend of the 15th and 16th of February.

The road closure occurred after multiple fatal accidents on I-15. One of these accidents happened when a 64-year-old man crashed into the back of a semi-truck. The accident happened on southbound I-15 near Pleasant View, by the lines for Box Elder County and Weber County. It is unclear what exactly caused the tragic accident, although the harsh weather conditions are likely to blame. The driver may have been going too fast for road conditions, his vision could have been obscured by snow, or maybe the vehicle slipped on ice, and he lost control of it. Officials are still gathering evidence to determine what happened. Unfortunately, the elderly man died at the scene of the crash. His identity has not yet been released to the public.

Another accident happened near Riverdale, Utah, in Weber County on Friday, the 14th of February 2025. A box truck was broken down on the I-15 exit ramp to I-84. It was pulled over into the gore area, which is the triangle-shaped area between the roadway and an entrance or exit ramp. At around 7:30 in the morning, a 29-year-old man driving a Mini Cooper was driving on I-15. He lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the back of the box truck. The ramp to I-84 was closed for several hours until approximately ten in the morning. The young driver unfortunately died in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident most likely happened because of the icy road conditions.

It’s no surprise that the most accident-prone season in Utah is winter. There are a variety of reasons why accidents are more likely to happen in winter, which we will go over in this article. In states with a milder climate, winters are not as dangerous. However, Utah is known for its sweltering summers and freezing winters. Statistics prove that there is indeed a significant increase in crashes during the winter. Most accidents happen in December, most likely because people inexperienced in driving in the snow are visiting family for the holidays. The Utah Highway Patrol also receives more calls about car accidents in the winter. They stress the importance of cold-weather driving safety in preventing accidents from occurring.

One of the causes of auto accidents in the winter is the lack of daylight hours. When winter comes around, the days are shorter, and there’s less sun. This means that people are more likely to be driving in the dark. Many people drive to and from work in the morning or at night, when it is dark outside. Additionally, the sun is in the process of rising or setting, the glare can make it difficult to see the road. The angle of the sun’s bright rays in the morning and evening is perfect for blinding drivers.

Perhaps the most obvious factor behind winter car accidents is weather conditions. When snowstorms cover the landscape, it can severely impact the roads. Ice can cause vehicles to slide and crash. Black ice is when the ice is nearly invisible on the road, causing unsuspecting drivers to crash. Ice can affect steering ability, traction, and more. Stopping distances can be longer on icy or snowy roads. In winter weather, drivers in Utah should make sure that their tires are suitable and that they use tire chains if needed.

Falling snow can cause low visibility and make it difficult to see the road. Fog is also more likely to happen in the winter, blocking the view of drivers. It’s crucial to road safety that drivers can see their surroundings, including other vehicles, road signs, and hazards. When drivers can’t see road signs, not only are they at risk of getting into an accident but they may get lost. These weather conditions may come on suddenly and force people to have to drive in dangerous conditions. It’s important for Utah residents to check the forecast and avoid driving in snowy weather if possible.

Another reason why more accidents happen in the winter is because of increased traffic on the roads. In early winter, the holidays mean that more people are on the roads to visit friends and family. However, Utah has a large skiing industry, so even after the holidays are over, the state still sees increased traffic from tourism. Unfortunately, many of these people may not have experience driving in snowy weather. More traffic on the roads, especially involving out-of-state drivers, means more accidents.

Rear-end collisions, such as in the cases mentioned earlier, often happen on icy roads because it’s more difficult to stop. Vehicles may also slide off of the road and strike poles or guardrails or slide off of ledges or into bodies of water. Intersections are particularly dangerous areas of the road during the winter. An accident on the road when there is ice or low visibility can lead to further crashes involving multiple vehicles.

It’s important to be as safe as possible whenever you’re driving, but especially in the winter. If you were injured in an auto accident, reach out to a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. Accidents that happen in winter can be complicated. A driver speeding could be at fault, or even the government for not closing a road or properly salting it to melt the ice.
